Project Description

A1 Roofing’s KangaRoof undertook a residential roof replacement in Columbia, Maryland, that included removing the existing roof covering and replacing the decking across the photographed lower roof section. The work progressed from exposed framing and insulation to new OSB sheathing, underlayment, and architectural asphalt shingles.

The roof runs alongside tall exterior walls and large windows, with adjoining slopes and several roof-to-wall transitions. This project illustrates the work beneath the finished shingles as part of our roofing services in Columbia, MD.

Removing the Existing Roof Covering

The crew began by removing the old shingles and underlying roofing material. An elevated debris container was positioned beside the roof so removed material could be collected near the work area. Replacement sheathing and shingle bundles were staged nearby.

As the roof covering came off, the existing plywood deck became accessible. The work then extended below the roofing layers: the crew removed decking across the documented lower section, exposing the framing and insulation between the members.

Opening the Roof Deck

The exposed section stretched between taller portions of the home, with wood framing and cross-bracing visible below the former deck surface. This stage provided a direct view of the construction beneath the shingles and showed the extent of the decking removal in this part of the roof.

Decking replacement was a substantial part of the photographed work. The sequence shows the old plywood being removed and a new deck being installed over the framing before the replacement roof covering went on.

Installing New OSB Roof Sheathing

The crew carried new OSB panels into position and fastened them across the opened roof section. OSB, or oriented strand board, is the wood panel material visible in the installation photos.

The panels were fitted around the projecting wall sections as the crew worked across the roof. Successive views show the exposed framing being covered with new sheathing, establishing the deck surface for the next roofing layers.

This was a visible change in the project: the open framing and insulation gave way to a newly sheathed roof section before underlayment and shingles were added.

Adding Underlayment and Architectural Shingles

With the new sheathing in place, the work progressed to underlayment and shingle installation. One view captures both stages together: underlayment remains visible farther up the slope while new architectural shingles cover the foreground.

The shingles have a dimensional pattern and a blend of muted brown and gray tones. Later views show the new covering extending across the lower roof planes, with the crew continuing work along the walls beneath the large windows.

The Visible Result

The documented roof section progressed from old roofing and exposed framing to new OSB decking and an architectural shingle covering. The later photos show the new shingle surface across the lower slopes while work continued at adjoining wall areas.

This Columbia project highlights the scope a roof replacement can involve beneath its visible surface. Here, the new roof covering followed the removal and replacement of the decking in the photographed work area.
