Cracks in the Chimney Crown Allowed Rainwater to Enter the Home
The homeowner noticed water intrusion during periods of blowing or driving rain. The existing chimney crown had several visible cracks extending across its surface and around the chimney liner.

Preparing the Existing Chimney Crown for Resurfacing
Before applying the new mortar, the A1 Roofing’s KangaRoof crew mechanically prepared the existing crown surface.
The project photographs show the technician grinding the crown, including the cracked areas near the outer perimeter and around the chimney liner. This preparation exposed the damaged surface and created a suitable working area for the new resurfacing material.
The work was carefully concentrated on the top of the chimney. The existing brick chimney structure and chimney cap remained outside the resurfacing scope.
Applying Crack-Resistant Mortar Across the Crown
After preparing the surface, the crew applied a crack-resistant mortar mix across the existing chimney crown.
The new material was worked around the base of the chimney liner, over the prepared cracked areas, and toward the outer edges of the crown. The technician then shaped and smoothed the mortar to create a continuous resurfaced layer.
The project scope included:
